Urban Henry Riener, 85

Urban Henry Riener, 85, went to be with the Lord July 15th, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Cottonwood, due to complications from cancer.

He was born the son of Clem and Margaret Schmidt Riener on March 29th, 1923 in Cottonwood.

As a young man, he worked at Hattrup's sawmill in Keuterville and during this employment, he lost his arm in an accident. He attended schools in Cottonwood, the University of Idaho and a Vo-Tech school in Wieser, Idaho. He returned to Cottonwood and went into business with his father, Clem, at Riener’s Motors. He purchased H & H Grocery Store from Mike Hilbert, changing the name to Riener’s Grocery. He sold the business to his son Gary when he retired in 1984 and continued helping, never missing a freight day for the next 24 years. Also, he enjoyed working in his shop and helping out on several farms running combine, tractors, or whatever was needed.

He was an avid lover of life and all outdoor activities. He loved hunting, fishing, shooting trap and golf, having recorded two Holes-in-One on the Grangeville golf course. His biggest love was jet boating on the Salmon River. He has given joy to his family and many friends helping them catch their 1st steelhead. The highlight every year for Urbie, was taking the Bishop and several Catholic Priest's fishing on the river.

He was a member of St. Mary Parish, The Knights of Columbus, a member of the Cottonwood Fire Department and the Grangeville Country Club.

He married Rita Seubert at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood on June 12th, 1945, and together they raised 16 children. The stories shared by his children about their dad provide endless hours of memories.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, at the family home in Cottonwood; their 16 children which entails 10 sons: Thomas and wife Robin, John and wife Sherry, Gary, Donald (Barney) and friend Caroline, and Joe and wife Angie, all of Cottonwood, Dick and wife Kristi of New Plymouth, Harry and wife Jan of Boise, Jim and wife Kathy of Ferdinand, Dale and friend JoAnne of Lewiston, and Ken and friend Dana of Superior, MT; 6 daughters: Carla Riener of Clarkston WA, Betty Dunham and Cindy Ostrander and her husband James of Walla Walla, WA, Sharon Kinzer and husband Cliff of Craigmont, Jean Poxleitner and husband Phil of Grangeville, and Carrie NyGaard and husband Todd of Kamiah; 48 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren; sisters Regina Hollandsworth and Loreen Madden DeShiell’s and her husband Hank of Cottonwood, Marcella Martinson of Red Bluff, CA, Maryanne Kirkes of Las Vegas, NV; Brother-in-Law Ben Seubert and wife Florence of Lewiston, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by grandsons Jacob Riener and Olive twin boys; his parents, Clem and Maggie; 2 baby brothers, and son-in-law, David Dunham.

All, especially his children, will remember him as he instilled strong work ethic and the determination to excel, succeed, and cherish life to the fullest.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of his grandson, Shaun Riener, of Blackmer
Funeral Home in Grangeville, in conjunction with Uhlorn Funeral Home in Cottonwood for viewing facilities.

Viewing will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2008, from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., at Uhlorn Funeral Home in Cottonwood. The rosary will be recited on Monday, July 21, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00. Burial will conclude the services at Cottonwood Catholic Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Cottonwood Community Hall.

Ione E. Carter, 73

Ione E. Carter, 73, of Grangeville, passed away Friday, July 5, 2008, at her home in Grangeville.

Ione was born May 2, 1935 at Iowa City, Iowa, a daughter of Maynard and Eva May Abbot Newton. She had lived in Grangeville and the surrounding area for several years.
She was active in the Eagles Lodge, having served as president for two years and also enjoyed running the bingo at the lodge. She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Rudy Carter, at the family home in Grangeville; her five children, Wesley Jennings and his wife Sandy, Wanda Torres, Winona Latta and husband Earl, Wendy Carter, and Wildena Jennings and husband Tim; fifteen grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville. Burial followed at White Bird Cemetery.

Lavern Keeler, 80

Lavern Keeler, 80, of Grangeville, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008, with his family at his side.

Lavern was born on July 29, 1927 to Dell and Sadie V. Schmadeka Keeler at Grangeville. His sister, Betty Lou, was born in 1930. His parents bought the family ranch in the Tolo Lake area when Lavern was 7 years old.

Lavern attended school at Fairview School, Tolo Lake School, and Grangeville High School. At the age of 17, his father, Dell, passed away. From then on, Lavern ran the family ranch. His mother Sadie passed away in 1991.

Lavern spent his early years working for H&H Ranch, A&T Mining, and LT&L Ranch. He also farmed for Vern Workman and Paul Hauger. He then retired to the family ranch.

On May 17, 1955, he married Edith Laurene Paul in McCall, Idaho. Edith joined him at the family ranch and had eight children: Delvin, Doreen, Lonnie, Kathy, Jerry, Donnie, Rick, and Darlene, all in Grangeville.

Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, farming and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edith; five sons, Delvin, Lonnie, Jerry (Pam), Donnie (Kristi), and Rick (Jody) all of Grangeville; two daughters, Kathy Keeler-Martin of Springfield, Oregon, and Darlene Key (Michael) of Grangeville; sister, Betty Lou Castle of Las Vegas, Nevada; 11 grandchildren, Randa, Kitty, Jesse, Cori, Cody, Brendan, Brooke, Sadie, Courtney, Chantel, Garrett; 4 step-grandchildren, RaeDaun, Lee, Jason, Justin; 9 great-grandchildren, Tamra, Cordell, Allyson, Austin, Morgan, Bryden, Emily, Justin, Holly, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dell and Sadie; an infant daughter, Doreen, and a son-in-law, Bill Martin.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 12, at 1:00 p.m., at the Senior Citizen Center in Grangeville with a potluck dinner immediately following.

Arthur M. Smith, Jr., 86

Arthur M. Smith, Jr., 86, of Grangeville, Idaho, died June 4th at the Trinity Nursing Home in Nampa, Idaho of causes related to age. He is a former Grangeville logging contractor who was very active in the local community.

Smith was born January 7, 1922 in Boise to Arthur and Grace Ingram Smith. He was married in 1946 to Constance Lowe in Council, ID. At the time of his death they had been married 61 years.


Arthur attended Boise High School through his junior year and graduated from Council High School. He worked in logging for several years before entering the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served as motor machinist's mate in on a PT boat in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters, participating in the Normandy invasion.


After being discharged from the US Navy in 1946, Arthur resumed his logging career in Council, Idaho. Two sons, Randy and David, were born in Council in 1949, and 1951, respectively. Arthur and family moved to Grangeville in 1953 and their daughter, Patricia, was born in 1954.


Arthur worked with his brother, Owen, for several years as a logging contractor and later started his own business which he owned and operated for 45 years. His son, Randy, worked with his father from 1972 to 1983.


Arthur is a Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #1825, a Past District Deputy, and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Hospital from 1978-1989. He is also past State Secretary for the Elks.


He is a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #9 AF and AM and served as a member of the Grangeville City Council. He is a past President of the Snowhaven Ski Area, and was active at the Grangeville Country Club.


He is survived by his wife, Connie, of Grangeville; two sons, Randy of Spokane, WA and spouse Shari, and David of Kenilworth, IL and spouse Rhonda; daughter, Patricia, of Boise, ID and spouse Michael; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by one sister, Leona Wichman, and three brothers, Owen, Melvin, and Maurice.


Services will be held at Saturday, June 7, at 10:00 a.m. the Blackmer Funeral Home, in Grangeville.

Jacob "Jake" Steven Fredrickson, 23

Jacob “Jake” Fredrickson, 23, of Grangeville, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008, near Salmon, Idaho, from injuries he received from a fall.

Jake was born December 11, 1984, in Grangeville, a son of Mike and Lynne Westberg Fredrickson. He attended Grangeville Schools, graduating from Grangeville High School in 2003. He was active in sports, excelling in track. Following his graduation, he enrolled at the University of Idaho and belonged to Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was scheduled to receive his degree in Forestry this December.

He loved fly fishing and he enjoyed playing his guitar. He also loved working in the woods, having been a seasonal employee with the Idaho Department of Lands, and most recently was working with the U.S Forest Service in Salmon, Idaho with the helicopter repelling crew.

He is survived by his parents, Mike and Lynne Fredrickson of Grangeville; his grandfather, Ron Fredrickson of Grangeville; his grandmother, Ruth Westberg of Grangeville; his sister, Jill Fredrickson of Meridian; his brother, Matt Fredrickson of Twin Falls, ID; and his nieces, Mindy and Madison. He is also survived by several uncles, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Maureen Fredrickson, and grandfather, Gus Westberg.

Services will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville. Pastor Harold Gott will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Mount Idaho Cemetery.

Shirley J. Boutwell Walker, 74

Shirley J. Boutwell Walker, 74, of Grangeville, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at her residence near Grangeville.

Shirley was born January 25, 1934, in up state New York, to Mr. & Mrs. Bart. She attended schools and graduated in Rochester, New York.

She eventually moved to Stockton, California where she raised her 4 children from a previous marriage. She was employed by the UNCLE Credit Union as a credit manager for the IRA accounts. She retired in 1994. In 2001, she and Ben Walker moved to Grangeville where she resided until her death.

Her volunteer work at the Grangeville Food Bank and the Grangeville Visitor’s Center showed her great love for people and her yearning to lend a helping hand.

Shirley is survived by Ben Walker at their Grangeville home; her children, David Boutwell of Dublin, California, Daniel Boutwell of Olean, New York, Connie Cowgill of Stafford, Virginia, and Dicky Boutwell of Rutherglen, Virginia; various grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous friends and acquaintances.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville, with burial to follow at Mount Idaho Cemetery. Viewing will be on Wednesday, May 28, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Esther Jane See Hinds, 93

Esther Jane See Hinds was born August 4, 1914 near Globe, Arizona and passed away at Grangeville Health and Rehab Center May 14, 2008 at the age of 93.

Jane is survived by sons Charles (Lynda) and Edward (Linda); grandchildren Lori Hinds, Eraka Blewett, Marsha Moehrle, Tim Hinds and Michelle Modglin.

Jane was married to George Hinds for 52 years before he passed in 1996.

She began her teaching career in backwoods one room schools in California and finished as a special education teacher in Grangeville. She was a pioneer in the field of special needs and developed programs which were copied from schools around the country. An injury cut short her teaching career.

Living in a wheelchair never seemed to slow Jane down. She lived by herself after George passed until she was 91. At age 89, she went alone to Phoenix to see a cousin and seemed to have no trouble. Wherever she went she talked to people and always found someone who had a common bond.

The family will hold a short memorial service when they scatter her ashes along side George’s at Black Lake, the time to be determined later.

Cremation was under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville.

Dawson Tannor Blevins Payseno, stillborn

Dawson Tanner Blevins Payseno’s heart stopped beating at 9:14 p.m. on May 5, 2008, at Community Hospital in Missoula, Montana.

He will be loved and missed much by family and friends.

He is survived by his mother, Shannon Payseno; father, Charley Blevins, Jr.; brothers, Jessy Blevins, 14, and Hunter Payseno, 9; grandparents, Pam and Les Richardson; aunts and uncles, Shane York, Misty Lester, Paul and Lindsey Edwards; surrogate father, Ian Opheim; as well as many cousins and close family friends.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 16, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville. A lunch will follow at the Eagles Hall in Grangeville. All are welcome.

Una Mae Kelly, 82

Una Mae Kelly, 82, of Grangeville, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born August 23, 1925 at Marshall, Arkansas, a daughter of Walter and Cleara Flowers Holsted. She attended school in Marshall. She married Mervin Kelly on Feb. 10, 1950, in Marshall. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Ontario, Oregon, and then in the early 1960’s, they moved to Grangeville, Idaho where Mervin was employed at the local saw mill. Mr. Kelly passed away in 1988.

Una Mae was a homemaker and loved to crochet. She was a member of the Grangeville Christian Church and enjoyed attending bible studies while living at Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She is survived by two daughters, Debra Alm of Grangeville, and Linda and husband Rick Williams of Lewiston; a grandson, Don Alm, of Grangeville; a former son-in-law, David Alm, of Grangeville; a sister, Virginia Snow of Marshall, Arkansas; and a brother, Radius “Bill” Holsted of Arkansas. In addition to her husband, her parents and several brothers and sisters died earlier.

Services will be held Monday, May 5, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville. Pastor Harold Gott of the Grangeville Christian Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home.

Latitia M. Williams, 70

Latitia “Tish” Mae Lee Arnold Williams, 70, of Kamiah, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino.

She was born April 25, 1938 in Sumerfield, Oklahoma to Thomas and Blanch Lee. She moved to Hayfork, California in 1951, where she lived until 3 ½ years ago. She moved to Kamiah in 2004 to be closer to her daughter “Sis”.

Tish married Joe Davied Arnold on July 2, 1955. They were married 14 years. He died November 7, 1969. She then married Charles Andrew Williams August 30, 1975.

Tish was a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, camping, dancing, gardening and listening to her dad and her brother “Bill” play music. She was a member of V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary, a Life Member of D.A.V. Auxiliary, and a member of American Legion.

Tish is survived by her husband, Charles Andrew Williams of Kamiah; daughters, Linda Webb and husband Mark of Soulsbyville, California, Thelma Guy and husband Clinton of Kamiah; grandsons, Dale Arnold and wife Michelle of Kingman, Arizona, Kyland Lusby and wife Tera of Sparks, Nevada, Travas Waldrop of Lewiston, Dustan Waldrop of Grangeville, and Tysan Guy of Kamiah; step grandson Clinton Guy Jr. of Winston, Oregon; great-granddaughters Alexis Lusby of Sparks, Nevada, and Mattisyn and Mikayla Waldrop of Lewiston; great-grandsons Ethan Arnold of Kingman, Arizona, and Chaston and Kyan Lusby of Sparks, Nevada; step great-granddaughters Megan Guy of Brookings, Oregon, and Brianna and Kerryssa Wainwright of Modesto, California; step great-grandsons Andy Hays and Alex Hays of Richland Washington, Michael Guy of Winston, Oregon, and David and Bryan Wainwright of Modesto, California.

Tish was preceded in death by her first husband, Joe Davied Arnold; son, Joe Davied Arnold Jr.; parents, Thomas and Blanch Lee; sisters Pearl Robbins and Margaret Dunkin, and step granddaughter Melinda Hays.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at Kamiah Cemetery, with the Rev. Luann Howard officiating.
