Mary Alice Newby, 56

GRANGEVILLE: Mary Alice Newby, 56, beloved daughter, sister, teacher and friend went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 25, 2006. She was born February 17, 1950 to Alvis Oliver Newby and Ana Miriam Newby. Mary was one of 13 children. She was born and raised in Grangeville. She graduated from Grangeville High School in 1968. She graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in 1972 with a teaching degree. Mary taught for about 30 years for School District 241. Most of her years were spent teaching at White Bird. She felt that her students were just apart of her extended family. In 1996 she was honored as Grand Marshall of White Bird Days and Rodeo. In 1998 she was honored as teacher of the year for School District 241. She will be sorely missed and can never be replaced in the hearts for family and friends.
Mary is survived by her mother, Ana of Grangeville, 2 brothers, John William Newby of Spokane, Washington and Marvin Michael Newby of Ammon, Idaho, and 5 sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Mae Saless of Grangeville, Nella Sharon DeBarber of Hamilton, Montana, Patricia Sue Salmeier of Caldwell, Idaho, Helen Kathleen Baldwin of Potlatch, Idaho and Nancy Ellen Cline of Grangeville. She is also survived by 102 nieces and nephews (including great and great-greats).
Mary was preceded in death, by her Father Alvis Newby and by three brothers: Alvis Franklin Newby, Richard Marian Newby and George Steven Newby and two sisters: Barbara Lee Moses and Juanita Jean Spencer.
Services will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, March 2, 2006 at the Grangeville United Methodist Church, burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery, Grangeville. Friends may call Wednesday, March 1, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home.
