Richard A. Ackerman, 76
Richard A. Ackerman, 76, of Grangeville, died unexpectedly Sunday, September 3, 2006 of a heart attack at Syringa General Hospital in Grangeville.
Richard was born July 16, 1930 at Glentana, Montana to Anthony D. and Eleanora M. (Kramer) Ackerman. In the summer of 1936 his family moved to Grangeville where Richard attended elementary school and played four years of varsity football for the Bulldogs. After graduating in 1949 from G.H.S., he worked in the local J.C. Penney’s store. In 1951 he enlisted with the U.S. Army serving as an M.P. in San Francisco, and later as a cook at Fort Ord in California. He was discharged from the Army in March of 1953 but stayed active in the Army Reserves until August of 1956.
On June 19, 1957 he married Gladys Glenn at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish and they later divorced. During his time in the reserves and until 1960 he worked as a scaler and saw boss for Gene Mager Logging in Elk City, Idaho. Richard then moved his young family to Cottonwood to help his sister Lucile operate the Royale Room Café. In 1964 he leased the Imperial Hotel Restaurant which he operated until February 23, 1966 when the hotel was destroyed by a fire. He then went to work for the Grangeville Grange Supply and later became manager there. In 1986 Union Warehouse and Supply acquired the Grange Supply and he worked for Union Warehouse in the feed store until retirement in 1992.
Richard was a master gardener, bringing restored life to old and sick plants. He enjoyed hunting, dancing, attending several dances at area community halls, and was very active helping friends with their needs such as shopping for them, fixing things around their homes, taking care of their plants or just visiting.
He was especially helpful towards his family, dropping whatever he was doing to help them. He would can vegetables from his garden and raise plants for them, allowing family and friends to have the plants until they made them sick. He would then take them back, fix them, and then bring them back. He could knit, tat and carpenter with the best of anyone.
Richard was also a communicant of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, a life long member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Grangeville Elks and the Grangeville Eagles.
He is survived by two sons, Jim Ackerman of Sandpoint, Idaho and Scott Ackerman of McCall, Idaho; four daughters, Kim Reaney of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, Lucile Lamb of Grangeville, Bridget Collar of Lewiston and Mary Ellen Tillemans of Big Pine, California: 20 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren soon to arrive; three brothers, Lloyd Ackerman of Lewiston, Marvin Ackerman of Clarkston and Billy Ackerman of Mt. Shasta, California; three sisters, Bernice Homer of Grangeville, Louise Davis of Ellensburg, Washington and Marion Roderick of Spokane. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Francis, and a sister Lucile Kaschmitter.
A rosary will be recited on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Grangeville. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Internment will be held at a later date at Prairie View Cemetery.
