Arthur M. Smith, Jr., 86, of Grangeville, Idaho, died June 4th at the Trinity Nursing Home in Nampa, Idaho of causes related to age. He is a former Grangeville logging contractor who was very active in the local community.Smith was born January 7, 1922 in Boise to Arthur and Grace Ingram Smith. He was married in 1946 to Constance Lowe in Council, ID. At the time of his death they had been married 61 years.
Arthur attended Boise High School through his junior year and graduated from Council High School. He worked in logging for several years before entering the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served as motor machinist's mate in on a PT boat in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters, participating in the Normandy invasion.
After being discharged from the US Navy in 1946, Arthur resumed his logging career in Council, Idaho. Two sons, Randy and David, were born in Council in 1949, and 1951, respectively. Arthur and family moved to Grangeville in 1953 and their daughter, Patricia, was born in 1954.
Arthur worked with his brother, Owen, for several years as a logging contractor and later started his own business which he owned and operated for 45 years. His son, Randy, worked with his father from 1972 to 1983.
Arthur is a Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #1825, a Past District Deputy, and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Hospital from 1978-1989. He is also past State Secretary for the Elks.
He is a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #9 AF and AM and served as a member of the Grangeville City Council. He is a past President of the Snowhaven Ski Area, and was active at the Grangeville Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Connie, of Grangeville; two sons, Randy of Spokane, WA and spouse Shari, and David of Kenilworth, IL and spouse Rhonda; daughter, Patricia, of Boise, ID and spouse Michael; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Leona Wichman, and three brothers, Owen, Melvin, and Maurice.
Services will be held at Saturday, June 7, at 10:00 a.m. the Blackmer Funeral Home, in Grangeville.
