Lavern Keeler, 80

Lavern Keeler, 80, of Grangeville, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008, with his family at his side.

Lavern was born on July 29, 1927 to Dell and Sadie V. Schmadeka Keeler at Grangeville. His sister, Betty Lou, was born in 1930. His parents bought the family ranch in the Tolo Lake area when Lavern was 7 years old.

Lavern attended school at Fairview School, Tolo Lake School, and Grangeville High School. At the age of 17, his father, Dell, passed away. From then on, Lavern ran the family ranch. His mother Sadie passed away in 1991.

Lavern spent his early years working for H&H Ranch, A&T Mining, and LT&L Ranch. He also farmed for Vern Workman and Paul Hauger. He then retired to the family ranch.

On May 17, 1955, he married Edith Laurene Paul in McCall, Idaho. Edith joined him at the family ranch and had eight children: Delvin, Doreen, Lonnie, Kathy, Jerry, Donnie, Rick, and Darlene, all in Grangeville.

Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, farming and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edith; five sons, Delvin, Lonnie, Jerry (Pam), Donnie (Kristi), and Rick (Jody) all of Grangeville; two daughters, Kathy Keeler-Martin of Springfield, Oregon, and Darlene Key (Michael) of Grangeville; sister, Betty Lou Castle of Las Vegas, Nevada; 11 grandchildren, Randa, Kitty, Jesse, Cori, Cody, Brendan, Brooke, Sadie, Courtney, Chantel, Garrett; 4 step-grandchildren, RaeDaun, Lee, Jason, Justin; 9 great-grandchildren, Tamra, Cordell, Allyson, Austin, Morgan, Bryden, Emily, Justin, Holly, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dell and Sadie; an infant daughter, Doreen, and a son-in-law, Bill Martin.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 12, at 1:00 p.m., at the Senior Citizen Center in Grangeville with a potluck dinner immediately following.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville.
