Ruth I. Harmon, 87, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2009, at Syringa General Hospital inGrangeville, Idaho.

 

She was born to Alonzo and Ina Lightford on June 17, 1921 in Willits, California. They moved to Nice, CA and she attended Upper Lake High School, where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Verlyn E. Harmon. They were married in 1941 and lived in Kelseyville, CA. They moved to Ukiah, CA, where their oldest son, Dennis, was born in 1941. They moved back to Kelseyville where they built a home and Verlyn worked for Norton Motors for 12 years as a mechanic. Their son David was born in 1946. Verlyn and Ruth owned and operated a service station in Kelseyville for many years. 

 

Ruth worked in pear packing sheds in the summer months. She also worked for the US Postal Service for many years, even serving as interim Postmaster for some of the smaller Post Offices in the country. She retired in 1983. 

 

Verlyn and Ruth did lots of traveling. Both were avid bowlers and Ruth went on trips with her bowling team all over the United States. In 1992, they bought a home in Grangeville, Idaho and lived there for many happy years. The last year of her life, she lived at the Meadowlark Home (assisted living) in Grangeville. 

 

Ruth had many hobbies. She was a great cook. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, oil painting and gardening. She received various ribbons from the local fair for her beautiful flower entries. She delighted in visits from her family and friends. 

 

She is survived by her two sons, Dennis (Barbara) Harmon of Mount Idaho, Idaho, and David (Nancy) Harmon of Grangeville; grandchildren, Janet (Brenndon) Bosse of Kelseyville, Lisa (Hank) Owen of Marshfield, MO, Heather (Jeff) McFrederick of Idaho City, ID, Brett Harmon of Clarkston, WA, Kimberly (Bill) O’Donnell of Santa Rosa, CA, and Jennifer (David) Plaza of Morgan Hill, CA; great grandchildren, Carolyn, Jessica, Rachel, April, Garrett, Mary, Spencer, Jack David, Jarret, Kendra, Hailey, Isaiah and Malynn; four great-great grandchildren also survive her. She also leaves her longtime friend, Eunice Norton of Kelseyville.   Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Verlyn; brothers Raymond and Kenneth; both of her parents, and a granddaughter, Senaida Harmon. 

 

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home, 305 N. Mill Street, in Grangeville. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville.  

 

Immediately following the service, a celebration of her life with family and friends will be held at the Grangeville Christian Church, located at the corner of S. Idaho and West South 1st Streets in Grangeville.
