Eva May Manes, 96, a Grangeville homemaker, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston of infirmities related to age.  

 

Eva was born December 1, 1912, at Grangeville. She was the daughter of P.Y. “Doc” and Loulie E. (Irwin) Jesse. She graduated from Grangeville High School in 1931 and attended Northwest Business College in Spokane, returning to Grangeville to work at the Triple A Office, now known as the Farm Service Agency. 

 

On February 4, 1942, she married Alfred W. Manes in Grangeville. They resided in Grangeville until 1943 when they purchased a ranch 5 ½ miles east of Grangeville where they farmed and raised registered Polled Hereford cattle. The size of the ranch grew through the years to over 1000 acres by the time they retired and moved back to Grangeville in 1970. 

 

Eva was a member of the Grangeville Christian Church where she devotedly gave of her time and talents teaching 3rd grade Sunday School and working in the Christian Women’s Fellowship group. She enjoyed her flower garden, Community Sewing Club, cooking, crocheting, fishing, camping, and spending many treasured moments with her grandchildren. All their married life, they enjoyed their travels around the United States, including Alaska. During her widowed years she enjoyed her Sunday afternoon gatherings with friends visiting and playing Scrabble. 

 

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara DeHaas and husband Bernard of Grangeville, and Patricia “Trish” Mayo and husband Doug of Clarkston, Washington; three granddaughters, Cynthia Ray of Wichita, Kansas, Monica Randall and Lisa DeHaas of Kennewick, Washington, and grandson Ted of Big Bear Lake, California, and six great grandchildren. 

 

Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, who died in 1995; her sister, Opal Long who died in 1992; and a baby brother, Rex. 

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m., at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville. Viewing will be held on Saturday prior to the service from 9:00 to 12:30, at the funeral home. 

 

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Grangeville Christian Church Sanctuary building fund.
