Len J. Koole, 88, of Grangeville, passed away Monday, April 27, 2009. Len was born at Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada on March 22, 1921 to Arie and Arendena (Nyhoff) Koole. Len grew up on a farm near Monarch, Canada that his parents had homesteaded. In 1934, Len’s parents moved their family to Grangeville, where they had purchased a farm. On March 9, 1944, Len married Leona M. Schlieper. They moved back to Alberta and purchased the family homestead farm, and farmed there until 1948, at which time they leased out the homestead and moved back to Grangeville and leased the farm there from Len’s parents. That same year, their daughter Debbie was born, and then in 1951, their son Arie was born. In 1963, after the death of Len’s parents, he purchased the Grangeville farm. They lived on the farm until 1976 at which time they moved to Lewiston where they had built a new home. They continued to farm at Grangeville until the mid 90’s, at which time they leased out the Grangeville farm. Even though the farm was leased, Len never stopped performing duties on the farm, (weeds were the enemy). In October 2006, his loving wife, Leona, passed away. Len is survived by his two children, Debbie (Randy) Carrell, and Arie (Wanda) Koole; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, William and Arie; and his two sisters, Hendrika (Betournay) and Jantien (Pennell). Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., at Blackmer Funeral Home, 305 N. Mill Street, in Grangeville, Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville. Viewing will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, any contributions may be made to a charitable organization of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville.
