In July 2007, with the help of her good friend, Marilyn Forsmann, Helen moved to the Royal Plaza retirement center in Lewiston. She was grateful for the good care and friends she enjoyed in her time there.

Frank R. Zumwalt, 81

Long time Salmon River rancher, Frank Zumwalt, 81, of White Bird, died at his home with his family by his side, on November 14, 2007 after a long time illness.

Frank was born in Grangeville, Idaho on May 6, 1926 to Martin and Ester Zumwalt.
When he was a child the family moved around a lot looking for work. After many moves, Frank graduated from high school in Kooskia in 1944. Shortly after, the family moved to White Bird and bought a ranch.

On June 1, 1962 he married Anneliese Hample. Together they took over and bought the ranch and raised their family.

Frank enjoyed being around friends and family, especially if he could make them laugh. He cared very much for his cattle and was very proud of the herd he had built up over the years. He was known far and wide for the quality of cattle he raised and was awarded champion Pen Crossbred Steers at the Lewiston Hereford week in 1988. Even during the last few months of his life, he spent days looking for cattle that needed to be home. Frank’s philosophy was “Never ask someone else to do what you wouldn’t do.”

He is survived by his wife Ann; sons, Randy and Lisa of White Bird, and Kevin and Melissa of White Bird; stepchildren, Maryann and Ed Carlin of White Bird, and Dick and Marlene Kroencke of Bend, Oregon; sister Marjorie and Duane Arnhart of Boise; 3 nephews and numerous grandchildren.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Maurice and Paul, and sister Marie.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 11:00 a.m., at the IOOF Hall in White Bird, with burial to follow at the White Bird Cemetery. Following the graveside, there will be a lunch back at the hall, courtesy of the White Bird Rebekahs.
